How does it relate to the study of children’s literature?
Many
people are familiar with the classic Disney stories of Cinderella, Snow White
and the Seven Dwarfs, Beauty and the Beast, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping
Beauty, and so much more. However, these stories go beyond what children have
read from Walt Disney. Across the world, these stories are told in various
forms. The characters, setting, plot, and so much more changes. It may not even
seem like the same fairytale to someone who has never read it before.
For children's literature, it is important for students to be able to see multiple viewpoints especially at an early age. It’s important for them to gain knowledge about fairy tales that are from different cultures for various reasons. By learning about other versions of familiar stories, students are able to expand their minds and think outside the box. Students are able to compare the classic tale version with unfamiliar ones from other cultures. Students would be able to not the time period, setting, characters, plot, etc. Students could use a graphic organizer or Venn diagram to compare stories.
