WHY THIS IS WORTHY OF OUR TIME AND EFFORT?
Through our research and by reading diverse versions of the same fairy tale, Bridgette and Allison believe that having students read versions from other cultures would make a significant influences on their learning. It is crucial for students to be able to add to their own conceptions about fairy tales. Students would become aware how different cultures can alter a classic story. By comparing the plot, characters, setting, etc., students are able to make connections with what they already know. Allison and Bridgette liked the idea about having students read different versions of a fairy tale each day and doing a picture walk before actually reading the story. This would allow for students to use visual clues to predict what the story would be about. This also aids in comprehension and students can access their prior knowledge while doing so.
Bridgette and Allison would also use the concept of having students write their own version of a classic stories. After students are being exposed to assorted stories, they will be able to personalize the story for themselves by creating their own connections. This is important because students are using numerous literacy strategies to write their own stories. They will have the ability to change the characters’ names, plot, setting, and so on using literary elements and could even create their own illustrations. It’s important for the teacher to allow students to become creative and to guide them if they need help. This type of lesson is something that students could enjoy and be able to think outside the box.
